The 1,700 full- and part-time employees at East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) receive an equitable share of the firm's profits through a gainsharing program that rewards employees for meeting or exceeding patient satisfaction and financial goals.
A nonprofit governmental agency, EAMC determines an employee's position within a salary level by years of service and compensates based on market rates. Performance evaluations, conducted on employee anniversary dates, are separated from compensation adjustments in order to eliminate inequities caused by differences in how managers rate employees and to encourage professional development.
These compensation and evaluation practices encourage employees to work as a team toward the organization's goals. At special lunches held to celebrate achievements, managers serve line employees as a way to thank them for their service, further promoting a sense of membership in a common enterprise.
The flexible use of policies helps to create a fair workplace as well where all employees gain a sense that they will be treated equitably. Employees have a right to ask for exceptions to policies in cases of need, such as accessing banked sick time during a family crisis. These practices are open to all employees.
