At Pfizer, the world's largest pharmaceutical company, employees take pride in working at a company that creates medicines that save lives.
Recognition programs single out both individuals and teams for excellent achievement. STARS, for instance, is a peer-to-peer recognition program that enables employees to nominate individuals and teams for gift certificates worth $100 to $500. Successful employees and teams are highlighted in divisional newsletters. The Panther Award goes out quarterly and annually to teams that have contributed to the business in innovation, performance, and customer focus.
These recognition vehicles help employees to know that their individual contributions really do contribute to the overall success of the organization. Pfizer's philanthropic contributions are another source of pride. In 2002, the Chronicle of Philanthropy ranked Pfizer America's number one corporate donor. The company's giving programs are diverse, making a difference globally. For instance, through a program with the National Governors Association and the National Association of Community Health Centers, Pfizer makes its medications available at no charge to uninsured low-income patients at more than 350 health centers across the United States, a program through which it has donated nearly $250 million to date, and Pfizer Health Fellows is a program where employees can volunteer their services in nations hardest hit by HIV/AIDS, while remaining on the payroll.
