At the SAS Institute, a software maker with about 4,600 full- and part-time employees, the work environment shows the company's commitment to creating a healthy workplace. Campuses are beautifully landscaped and feature original artwork. Meals are subsidized at three on-site cafés. Break rooms are stocked with fresh fruit, M&Ms, and free drinks. Bathrooms have hand lotion. A 52,000-square-foot fitness center at headquarters includes a natatorium and a 10-lane swimming pool.
Employees set their own hours, working when they work best. Every employee has his or her own office. SAS will special order furniture, provides an on-site ergonomics specialist, and offers any necessary computer resources that will help employees do their jobs better. In computer manuals, SAS lists the name of the software developers who wrote the code. The personal and family sick care policies follow a philosophy that if a parent has a sick child, the parent and child should be at home - up to ten days per incident.
By supporting work and life balance and creating an environment conducive to work, employees can focus on their jobs and the company's goals. That all managers are working managers further encourages an esprit de corps. Finally, employees know their jobs are secure: in 26 years, SAS Institute has never had a layoff.
