At Timberland, a retail manufacturer known for its footwear, the 2,100 full- and part-time employees take pride in working for a company where the ethic is to "equip people to make a difference in their world."
The company's culture is devoted to serving others and provides employees the resources they need to do it. Service Sabbaticals are six-months of paid-time off in which employees work at a nonprofit organization. A cross-functional employee Selection Committee chooses proposals that demonstrate an ability to create positive, long-term, and systemic change within the non-profit. Serv-A-Palooza is a day-long event in which everybody in the company contributes toward community good and includes the "Spirit of Service Awards" for individuals and teams with exceptional records of contribution. And every Earth Day, Timberland sponsors local service events in the communities in which all of the Company's retail stores are located.
While employees take pride in their myriad opportunities to participate in making a difference in the world, they also take pride in the organization's recognition for service. One such plaudit came in 2002, when Timberland was a recipient of this year's Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership, the only Presidential Award that recognizes companies for outstanding achievement in employee and community relations.
