Research

The Great Place to Work® Institute pursues research programs that provide valuable information for those people and organizations interested in the process of creating and sustaining a great workplace, The following represent some of the principal resources we have available for the public or for use with our clients.

The Best People Practices© Database

The Institute has compiled a database of Best People Practices© that contains over 1,000 current examples of progressive people practices developed and implemented in great companies. These practices have been collected from the data we receive while assessing the 100 Best Companies to Work For® (as published in FORTUNE) and the "Best Small & Medium Companies to Work for" (published in HR Magazine). We share practices from this database with clients through our reports, presentations and workshops, and with the public through our public speaking activities.

Best People Practices© provide examples of practical ways in which companies further the development of Trust, Pride and Camaraderie in their workplaces. Considering a variety of practices prior to taking action can lead to thought-provoking discussions about how to create a great workplace within one's own organization. See Best Practice examples on this site.

The 100 Best and Trust Index© benchmarks

These two benchmarks present the most accurate representation of the level of trust that can be created in great workplaces, and in workplaces that are on the path to becoming great. These benchmarks present the average of the positive responses to the Trust Index© employee survey for employees of the "100 Best Companies to Work For in America", and for employees of the top third of the Institute's consulting clients.

Companies who use our Trust Index© survey or purchase our customized Benchmark Report can compare their employee responses to these distinct benchmarks thereby helping them to clearly see the strengths to build on and opportunities for improvement within their own organization.

A New Initiative to Improve the American Workplace

This research effort was sponsored by the New Prospect Foundation and managed by the Institute. We worked with the Business for Social Responsibility Education Fund to undertake this comprehensive study of the research and resources in the marketplace today that help companies improve their workplace culture. This important study accomplished the following:

  • Identified individuals and organizations providing resources for creating better workplaces.
  • Uncovered studies linking people practices and corporate performance.
  • Learned from CEOs and senior leaders in a variety of industries their perspective on the link between progressive people practices and firm performance, and the services and support they believe are needed to help create great workplace cultures.
"As an individual you never feel that you are in this alone. There is always someone there to help and to give support. Balancing family and work is very easy and supported. I have a situation where my husband is disabled and I have to be able to go at any time. I have had nothing but encouragement and support with my situation which makes me feel very valued and respected. I in turn make every effort to be fair and honest with myself, my associates and the enterprise."
