Punching the clock carries a whole new meaning for the hundreds of thousands of once-full-time workers who have sought part-time gigs to stay afloat. In fact, there are almost two million more part-time workers – 26.5 million total – in the United States now than there were a year ago, according the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A head with a heart
Paul Levy, the CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a Best Company listed in the 1993 book the '100 Best Companies to Work for in America', asked his employees to sacrifice a small amount so that no one would need to be laid off. The response was overwhelmingly positive!

FedEx's performance is one of the indicators of the overall economy that even the Federal Reserve keeps an eye on. Kai Ryssdal talks with its President and CEO Fred Smith about how it's handling the recession.
From the transcript:
"The overall economy, I think, really had a hard time beginning in the fourth quarter of last year as businesses of all sizes put a lot of brakes on their inventory and investment activities, and consumers stopped buying cars, and buying houses and buying durables, and had a slow retailing season. But having said that, I'm an optimist overall."
