The Best Workplaces in Chicago rankings are based on feedback from more than 81,000 employees at Great Place to Work®–Certified™ organizations with locations in the Chicago area. Employees completed an anonymous Trust Index© survey, answering questions about how frequently they experience the behaviors that create a great workplace, including, for example, management transparency, professional development opportunities, meaningful work, promotion equity, and the generosity of benefit programs. Results from the survey are highly reliable, having a 95% confidence level and a margin of error of 5% or less.

Being awarded a place on this list indicates the company has distinguished itself from peers by creating a Great Place to Work For All™. Rankings reward organizations where not only the majority of their employees experience a great place to work, but these experiences are highly consistent, regardless of who people are or what they do in the organization. Scores take into account the complexity and size of the employee population. Companies are rewarded based on how much of their business is located in Chicago.

Best Workplaces in New York

Published together with Fortune, The Best Workplaces in New York ranking is based entirely upon feedback from employees at Great Place to Work–Certified™ companies either headquartered or with major locations in New York who completed our Trust Index Employee Survey. Employees anonymously answered questions about how frequently they experience the behaviors that create a great workplace, including everything from the fairness of their company’s promotions, to who has access to information and leadership, the level of support for employees’ personal lives, and the degree of inclusiveness and connection they feel with colleagues. Results from the survey are highly reliable, having a 95% confidence level and a margin of error of 5% or less. We consider employees’ experiences on 58 questions in total, including an overall assessment of whether the company as a whole is a great place to work. The total score for each company is based entirely upon employee feedback and ranked relative to similarly-sized peers.

To produce this list, Great Place to Work anonymously surveys all or a statistically representative sample of all employees at the selected companies. Participants answer a detailed questionnaire considering everything from the fairness of their company’s promotions, to who has access to information and leadership, the level of support for employees’ personal lives, and the degree of inclusiveness and connection they feel with colleagues. Survey results have a high degree of reliability in accurately reflecting employees’ experiences: In statistical terms, survey results meet a 95 percent confidence level and a margin of error of 5 percent or less. We consider employees’ experiences on 58 questions in total, including an overall assessment of whether the company as a whole is a great place to work. The total score for each company is based entirely upon employee feedback and ranked relative to similarly-sized peers.
