The first local government agency to appear on this list, the City of Rancho Cordova serves 66,000 residents and brings a revolutionary, "corporate" approach to government by encouraging and rewarding entrepreneurial thinking. To best determine fit, job candidates are evaluated for leadership competencies and some job finalists are taken on a "ride-along" with current staff to assess their interest and passion for the community before extending an offer. The Office of New Ideas vets suggestions from employees, and then empowers them to implement selected ideas. With a symbolic portion of a municipal bond being awarded as a "stock" certificate for exceptional work, employees take "ownership" of their city. The City integrates about 60 regular employees with nearly 100 contractors through collaborative partnerships which allow seamless service to the community. The City of Rancho Cordova is working to provide leadership development, wellness, recognition, and community involvement programs that make this workplace small but mighty.
