2012 Best Small & Medium Workplaces List

Announcing the ninth annual Great Place to Work Best Small & Medium Workplaces list. This year we’re very pleased to welcome FORTUNE Magazine as our media partner for the Small & Medium Workplaces list. With nearly 5 million readers, FORTUNE Magazine (who has long-published the 100 Best Companies to Work For® list) significantly contributes to increasing awareness of the value in creating great workplaces.

So what’s new with this year’s list? Well, we are proud to announce 18 newcomers to the list and to welcome back five companies who have made the list every single year since its inception. Spanning across industries and geography, this year’s list-makers pay between 50-100% of healthcare premiums for their employees and all but three cover some portion of dependents’ healthcare premium. 

Another notable trend that Great Place to Work has been monitoring in companies of all sizes is the shift in where and how we work in order to support employees’ work-life balance. This trend holds strong in this year’s Small & Medium list as we see increased flexible work options. 43 of our 50 Best offering some form of flexible working hours; 80% of these companies invite employees to telecommute some or all of the time as a permanent work arrangement.

This is just a small sampling of the great policies and practices you’ll find in this year’s list winner profiles. Remember that what works in one company won’t necessarily work in another but our hope is that these companies will inspire you to find your own way to engage, reward and communicate with your employees.
